But he didn't understand how much people loved her until he attended an exhibit honoring her and her best work at Houston's quilt show. In just a few hours, he heard from one woman whose home had burned to the ground, but she still scraped together the money to take a quilting class from Libby. After learning of the woman's tragedy, Libby took her own recent paycheck, endorsed it and handed it over. Another woman told Lester that she'd taken a class from Libby about six months after her son committed suicide.
The woman told Lester that they both cried, but that Libby had offered her more strength and understanding than any psychiatrist. After Libby's aneurysm and stroke, which left her unable to walk or talk or, at times, even open her eyes, friends in and out of the quilting community decided it was payback time and raised thousands of dollars to defray her ballooning expenses. Houston's medical community also stepped up. Lester can't say enough good about the doctors, nurses and therapists who not only saved Libby's life but helped her return to a life worth living.
With devastating brain injuries, Dannenbaum says, it's impossible to predict how or if patients will recover. One-third will be disabled permanently. And one-third bounce back, deficit-free. Libby still has a few deficits, but Dannenbaum focuses on her victories. Last year, she was named a distinguished alumna of Rice University. Today, she's not only walking and talking, but using wit and sarcasm.
She's not exactly the same person she was, as Lester explains it, but the new Libby also is intelligent and wise-cracking and lovable. Often surgeons are slam, bam, in and out, but Dannenbaum attended the ceremony at Rice with the Lehmans, and he enjoys the video updates Lester continues to send him.
More than once, Dannenbaum says, he'll be gritting his teeth over some minor annoyance when he gets a video of Libby, heartwarming and hilarious.
Lester understands that no recovery is completely smooth or free of setbacks. These days, he's excited that Libby is continuing occupational and speech therapy.
