Why do sheldon and leonard live together

Both Sheldon and Leonard come in comfortably under budget on rent payments. So, why did the pair share their space? The relationship was a symbiotic one, albeit Leonard was a bit of a doormat. Sheldon , simply put, needed someone to take care of him. Every Saturday night at pm, Sheldon does his laundry in the apartment building's laundry room in the basement. Saturday is a great time to do laundry because everyone typically has plans — but not our Shelly. And while Sheldon would never dream of taking his clothes off in public especially a communal laundry room , there's a sign hanging in the laundry room that says "Please keep your clothes on while doing laundry.

And an even better question, who caught them? We first learn about Sheldon and Leonard's official apartment flag when Sheldon is giving Leonard the official roommate agreement. Sheldon loves flags so much that he continues this theme when filming his "hit" Internet show, Fun With Flags. Sheldon explains that when the apartment is in distress the flag will be turned upside down, signifying so. Similar to having the flag up at half-mast. Well, if you look closely when Sheldon and Leonard are going through tough times, the roommate flag magnet is typically turned upside down on the fridge.

Carol Ann Susi was the iconic, boisterous voice behind Howard's mother. Sadly, Carol passed away suddenly in of cancer. Knowing the show could never duplicate Susi, they had Howard's mother pass away on the show as well.

To honor Carol, there is a small picture of her hanging on Leonard and Sheldon's fridge. In the hallway, Sheldon has his clothes in a laundry basket and Amy has her suitcase as Penny gives them the keys to their apartment. Penny tells them to enjoy their new place, while Leonard tells Sheldon to enjoy his mission to go boldly where no one has gone before.

Sheldon remarks that since it's Penny's bedroom, many men have gone there before. Amy is ready to go while Sheldon keeps giving Leonard chore reminders one of which he wrote on Penny's right palm. They say their final farewells and then Sheldon and Amy are in the apartment alone officially living together. Sheldon declares that the experiment has began. Later, while Amy is unpacking, Sheldon wonders which side of the bed she wants. Since Sheldon is more fuzzy about things, she wants him to pick one.

They argue about who should pick and Amy insists that Sheldon do it. The left is closer to the door for exit in case of emergency, but is closer to the entrance in case of attack. The other side is closer to the window, but perverts could be watching him while he slept. Amy then closed the drapes as a solution.

That solves the problem until Sheldon wonders about someone standing behind the drapes. Howard is coming to bed while Bernadette remarks that it is ridiculous that everyone else knows the sex of the baby including the doctor, the sonogram technician, Raj and maybe even his entire "Gray's Anatomy" chat room. Howard thinks that it will be more fun like a magic trick. Like the never-ending hanky that he pulled out of his fly which ended in a flower bouquet for her, the doctor will pull something beautiful out of her.

Bernadette quips that she should've listened when everyone said she could do better than Howard. Amy is getting ready for bed, making noises from the bathroom. Sheldon makes a sour face from those noises and then moves over to the side of the bed away from the bathroom. Amy notices his move and Sheldon remarks that she should be glad he was still in the room.

Amy climbs in and then asks that since sex if off the table, can they snuggle? Sheldon wants to build a wall of pillows between them.

Amy shoots his idea down. Sheldon says that he is very sensitive to heat and that her bottom should have iguanas lying next to it. Amy looks shocked as Sheldon turns over to go to sleep. Over to Apartment 4A, Leonard looks at his wristwatch declaring that it is Sheldon's bedtime and he is in for the night.

Penny is ecstatic to have the apartment all to themselves and asks what he wants to do and he takes his jacket off. She says he's a genius and that that's the best he can suggest. Leonard replies that since Sheldon is not there, they are going to put on some music and dance in their underwear. Penny just wants to have sex. Leonard tells her that that is inevitable after she sees him dancing. She does not looked convinced as he pulls down his pants and gets rocking.

Howard throws down a magazine and says that he is calling Raj which excites Bernadette. Then Bernadette has second thoughts. Raj is asleep with Cinnamon and picks up the phone just as Howard hangs up.

Next Penny is comforting Leonard who exerted himself from doing the worm and is now on his asthma inhaler. Amy is now spooning with Sheldon looking very happy.

Sheldon keeps moving toward her side of the bed and then pushes her onto the floor. Sheldon wakes up and wonders what she is doing on the floor. Amy takes out her phone, takes a flash picture on him and he runs away.

Next morning Amy and Penny are having coffee and everyone's tired. Immediately upon entering, the wall on the right houses Sheldon and Leonard's desks and the TV. The wall ends in the kitchen part.

This wall is rarely visible, being the wall that is the view into the apartment from which the episodes are filmed, and has only been shown on two occasions one is in " The Euclid Alternative ", S2E5 and the other is " The Colonization Application ", S8E The first was a view of the apartment from the hallway and the second had Leonard sitting at his desk during Sheldon's video. The wall immediately to the left after entering the apartment has a long bookshelf that ends at a small closet, with the wall itself ending at a large window with a desk and telescope.

Pasadena City Hall can be seen from the window at the alcove, which has been used on several occasions:. After the window, there is a corner and the hallway that leads to the bathroom, as well as Sheldon and Leonard's bedrooms. The kitchen area is a small area that has an island with rarely used barstools since they usually eat in the living room area.

A window is located at the end of the visible wall of the kitchen area which can be clearly seen in several kitchen area scenes, one typical instance is in " The Loobenfeld Decay " S1E10 , when Toby Loobenfeld talks with Sheldon in the kitchen area. Presumably, this window is one of the two windows the other being the large window described above that Sheldon has stated "creates a cross breeze" when he describes his Spot. Sheldon, at one point in time, had painted luminous glow-in-the-dark arrows on the floor pointing to the various nearest emergency exits throughout the room.

Production-wise, the bathroom interior, Sheldon's bedroom, Leonard's bedroom and the connecting hallway are actually filmed on a different set than the rest of the apartment. The actual apartment set ends at a corner in the hallway immediately after the bathroom door which is for easier filming access and better view of the actors for the studio audience.

Leonard discovers how difficult it was for Sheldon's former roommate to live with him. Sheldon places an ad for a roommate after his former roommate, Sebastian , is driven to the brink of madness from Sheldon's antics.

Leonard encounters Sebastian on his way to the interview with Sheldon, and he tells Leonard to run far away. At this time, the apartment also had significantly less furniture in the living room. Sheldon's only placement was two lawn chairs and cinder blocks as the TV stand.

Even at this point in time, Sheldon's lawn chair was placed in the exact spot that he claims later on the couch. Careful watchers may recognize the style of sofa; while the boys utilize the full three-cushion sofa, defective detective Adrian Monk from the series "Monk" sports the smaller, two cushion model, of the line.

In " The Bozeman Reaction ", the apartment got burglarized. Some of Sheldon and Leonard's game systems and various games were stolen. The police were also called to the apartment in " The Zarnecki Incursion ", when Sheldon's World of Warcraft account was hacked.

In " The Staircase Implementation ", an " apartment flag " is mentioned as a small blue flag with a coat of arms on it of a gold lion rampant on an Azure heraldry field of azure on it. Flipping it upside down signifies that the apartment is in distress. In " The Roommate Transmogrification ", Raj was given a lapel pin version. Sheldon's bedroom is located immediately after the bathroom. Sheldon usually keeps his bedroom locked, and supposedly rarely allows anyone inside, however, given the number of episodes where Leonard, Penny, his mother, Wil Wheaton, Amy, and others have been there, this appears to be more wishful thinking on Sheldon's part than actual practice.

There was even the fact that Howard and Bernadette conceived their daughter in Sheldon's bedroom. Sheldon eventually moved out, leaving his old bedroom vacant.

This room was temporarily taken over by Theodore who was hired by Sheldon to briefly stay there , Raj until he got a new apartment , and even Sheldon who used it for his work. With the news of Leonard and Penny expecting in the series finale, it can be safe to assume that they'll use the vacant room for their new child. Check out Sheldon's bedroom. Leonard's bedroom is the last room in the hallway. There is a ledge outside that runs by both bedroom windows. Sheldon uses this ledge during " The Bozeman Reaction " to access Leonard's room because he is too paranoid to go out of his bedroom because they were burglarized earlier in the episode.
